    A weather system hundreds of miles to the southeast of the Mariana Islands strengthened yesterday and could become a typhoon by early next week, but forecasters predict it will pass hundreds of miles south of Guam on Monday. As of 5 p.m. yesterday, Tropical Depression 04W was near Pohnpei, or about 970 miles east-southeast of Guam, according to the National Weather Service, which issued a tropical storm watch for several islands in the Federated States of Micronesia.
